2022-2023
Mrs. Chance’s Classroom Disclosure
4th Grade
WELCOME! I am so happy to welcome your child into fourth grade! I have been very busy preparing for the 2021-2022 school year, and I am looking forward to being your child’s teacher. My name is Mrs. Chance. This is my fifth-year teaching, and I am excited to be at WPA again! I live in Centerville with my husband Daniel and our 4 kids who are my biggest supporters.
I am very dedicated and passionate about teaching! My goal is for all students to feel loved, cared for, respected and safe at school. Students will know that when they come to my class it will be a place where they are free to be themselves, and grow as a person cognitively, emotionally, socially, and physically. I want your child to come out of my classroom more aware of the world around them and of who they are as an individual. One of the main reasons I wanted to become a teacher was so that I could be a positive role model in my students’ lives. I want to instill in my students a love of learning. I will teach them that they can accomplish anything they put their mind to through hard work! I want them to feel as though I am their biggest cheerleader and that their success is extremely important to me. To make our school year fun and productive, I would like to share some schedule details and policies with you:
Contact Information: Communication is extremely important to me. You may e-mail me at [email protected] anytime to ask questions or address concerns. Please allow up to 24 hours for a response. You may also set a time to meet with me one-on-one
My website can be accessed at www.hchance.weebly.com or on the school website. I will update my website by 5:00 every Monday. I will send out emails with important information and reminders to check my website.
WPA has an easy and user-friendly website where you will find information about school events, daily updates, schedules, and connect to ASPIRE where you can access your child's grades. Make sure you have contact information for all your child’s teachers. Students could have up to 3 different teachers.
Attendance & Tardy Policy: Your child’s daily attendance and punctuality is required and expected. Your child is expected to be at school by 7:55 A.M. every morning. The tardy bell rings at 8:00 a.m. If your child is sick, please let me know at the beginning of the day and send someone to get his/her missed work for the day. I will send home anything that needs and can be made up at home. Please help us instill responsible attendance habits early! If your child is more than 5 minutes late, they will need to stop at the office for a tardy slip. Five or more tardies in one term will give your child a "U" for Unsatisfactory in their literacy class citizenship grade.
Classroom Management/Discipline:
As a whole school, we will follow 5 Happy Class Rules. They are: NICE WORDS, CALM BODY, FOLLOW DIRECTIONS, NICE HANDS, and FINISH WORK. I will be using class dojo points as a positive and negative behavior management plan. You can download the class dojo app to see your child’s points. For every 25 points they get, they will earn a prize! The whole class will also work towards a whole class prize.
Supplies/Donations:
A supply and donation list has been added to the school website. Please take a look and donate what you can. Supplying a classroom with fun, engaging learning tools is something I love to do, but can be hard on my own. Some items will be used for personal use, and others will be used as community supplies. If you would like to donate extras for those who are unable to bring supplies, please feel free to do so! I will be setting up a list outside of my classroom of different items needed. Please look throughout the year to see what our classroom needs! THANK YOU!
Homework:
Homework is a link between school and home. It is an opportunity for you to see what we are learning and to observe how well your child is grasping new concepts and skills. Your student will have a B.E.E. Book (Bring Everything Everyday). This will serve as your child’s homework folder and a record of communication between school and home.
I believe that homework should only be assigned if it truly enhances understanding. Educational research consistently shows homework does not have a very large effect on learning in elementary school settings and rather can become a source of major discord at home. That being said, students will be expected to complete homework as they transition to junior high, etc. Consequently, I assign some homework and additional homework may be assigned based on student needs, or if an assignment was not finished in class.
Homework you may see includes:
Literacy:
Reading instruction will primarily be taught from the 4th grade Wonders Curriculum. We will have daily literacy lessons including grammar, reading comprehension, spelling, fluency, and vocabulary. The Wonders program is divided into six units, each being six weeks. These units allow students to expand their comprehension skills and review materialthroughout the year.
Unit 1: Think it Through
Unit 2: Amazing Animals
Unit 3: That’s the Spirit!
Unit 4: Fact or Fiction?
Unit 5: Figure it Out
Unit 6: Past, Present, and Future
20 minutes of reading every night is a part of the homework. Reading at home helps gain a larger vocabulary, understand story structure, and know that reading is valued. I encourage you to read with your child and have kids read out-loud to practice reading fluency. The reading log will be handed out on Monday and needs returned on the following Monday every week.
Literacy Grading:
Readworks 15%
Monthly Research Project 20%
Class Work Completion (Quality) 25%
Weekly Skills Assessment 25%
Reading Skills Check (Accuracy, Recognition, Tracker): 15%
Literacy will follow the traditional grading scale and students will receive a letter grade.
Math: Math instruction will be taught from Ready Math. I will be integrating many games, technology, group work, and independent problem solving each week to challenge students.
The online resource used in centers will be i-Ready. To supplement materials studied during class students are also required to complete 50 minutes of online i-Ready lessons per week, and each lesson must be completed with 80% or more accuracy. This will be spread out through the week, with the expectation that the time will be completed by Friday. Students will also be working on math fact memorization.
Math Homework:
Homework will primarily be given from the i-Ready curriculum and all work from the week will be due the following Monday.

Chapter 1: The Land We Call Home
Chapter 2: Geography Affects Us
Chapter 3: We Affect Geography
Chapter 4: The First Utahns

Science Curriculum:
For science we will be focusing on 4 main units that require students to ask questions, develop and participate in investigations, and construct explanations and design solutions. Students will help each other to utilize scientific thought and develop skills for themselves to be successful in the world that they will build. To guide understanding during these units we will use many resources including: Mystery Science, Generation Genius, and Nearpod.
Unit 1: Organisms Functioning In Their Environment
Unit 2: Energy Transfer
Unit 3: Wave Patterns
Unit 4: Observe Patterns In The Sky
Homework:
Homework will only be given if not completed during given class time.

Students will receive a letter grade for each of the “core” subjects: math, literacy, social studies, science and Spanish. Please check Aspire so there are no end of the year surprises and of course to see if your student is missing any assignments. If you have any questions, please contact me.
The grading scale is as follows:
A+ 97-100% A 94-96% A-90-93%
B+ 87-89% B 84-86% B- 80-83%
C+ 77-79% C 74-76% C- 70-73%
D+ 67-69% D 64-66% D- 60-63%
Volunteers:
I am so grateful to work in a school that provides so many parent volunteers! I am very excited to get you involved in our class this year. A sign-up sheet is available on the school website. I may need odd jobs done at school OR at home too.
If you would like to volunteer on class field trips, you will NEED to get a background check from the office and attend one of the days Julie sets up for fingerprints.
I only have a few requests when it comes to in-class volunteers:1) Unfortunately, siblings are not allowed to come. 2) Understand that some children do not do well with their parent in the classroom. If this is the case with your student, we will have to make adjustments. 3) Please come during your scheduled time and call ahead if you will be unable to come.
Birthdays:
We will celebrate birthdays and half birthdays (if they have a summer birthday) in our homeroom class! I will give them a crown to wear, the class will write them a card and we will sing to them. We do not allow treats to be shared but we would all love it if you came to read a special book to the class! You can even donate that book to our library! If you would like to do this, please contact me ahead of time! No child will be allowed to hand out party invitations in class.
I am excited to meet all of you!
Mrs. Chance 😊
